Mexico judicial training addresses international child abduction
Judges from 19 Mexican states and international specialists gathered for a training session focused on the challenges of international child abduction and the restitution of minors. The training aimed to unify judicial criteria and reduce response times to protect the rights and well-being of children involved in unilateral transfers across borders.
According to Héctor Macedo García, president of the Judiciary of the State of Mexico, there are approximately 600 documented international abduction cases in Mexico, with an estimated 15 to 20 percent occurring in the State of Mexico. Data presented during the event indicated that 214 new cases involving 284 children were recorded in Mexico over a nine-month period.
The proceedings emphasize the application of the 1980 Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. Officials noted that these legal actions are intended to return children to their habitual residence for custody determinations by local authorities, rather than deciding custody itself. Experts warned that procedural delays could result in international legal responsibilities for Mexico due to non-compliance with international treaties.
