Mexico land disputes in Chimalapas and Campeche raise community tensions

In the Los Chimalapas region of southeastern Mexico, residents of the Gustavo Díaz Ordaz colony in Cintalapa, Chiapas, have been given a 30‑day deadline to consider a request from San Miguel Chimalapa (Oaxaca) communal leaders to annex their ejido into the agrarian community. The area, part of the Selva Zoque biosphere reserve, has long been contested between Chiapas and Oaxaca over boundaries and land ownership, and locals are awaiting a response that could involve state or federal mediation.

Separately, a 500‑hectare dispute in the municipality of Hopelchén, Campeche, involves a Menonite community and landowner Luis Eduardo Huitz Villarreal. Lawyer Edwin Trejo Gutiérrez argues the conflict is a possession issue, not a dispossession, noting that both parties hold legal titles and a federal judge has ordered a review of restitution. While a settlement is possible, any resolution must respect existing judicial rulings.
