Mexico launches certification to attract Chinese tourists
Mexico's Secretariat of Tourism (Sectur) is implementing the updated ‘Cerca de China’ (Near China) certification to attract more travelers from the Chinese market. The initiative targets hotels, restaurants, and travel agencies, encouraging them to adopt specialized standards in hospitality, digital innovation, sustainability, gastronomy, and cultural promotion tailored to Chinese preferences.
This strategy follows an 8.2% increase in Chinese visitors to Mexico recorded at the end of 2025. To bolster promotion, VisitMexico has resumed its presence on Chinese digital platforms—including WeChat, Weibo, and Red Note (XiaoHongShu)—after an eight-year absence. Additionally, Mexico participated in ITB China 2026 to strengthen commercial ties with Asian industry professionals.
Air connectivity remains a key component of the effort, with existing routes such as Shenzhen–Mexico City operated by China Southern Airlines and Beijing–Tijuana–Mexico City operated by Hainan Airlines.
