Mexico launches national campaign to eradicate cattle worm (gusano barrenador)

The State Secretariat for Rural Development and Water Resources (Sedarh) in San Luis Potosí intensified surveillance, training and veterinary assistance across 59 municipalities, treating 147 active cases of the cattle worm (gusano barrenador) and coordinating with federal agencies including the Center for Emergency Health Operations (COES), the National Service for Health, Safety and Quality of Agrofood (SENASICA) and the Mexico‑U.S. Commission for the Prevention of Foot‑and‑Mouth Disease (CPA).

In Coahuila, the state Rural Development Secretary announced a nationwide campaign to control and eradicate the pest, shifting from containment to concrete eradication actions funded by both federal and state resources. A U.S. review team visited the state, and officials highlighted the upcoming inauguration of a sterile‑fly production plant in Metapa de Domínguez and the future opening of a larger facility in Edinburgh, Texas, expected to boost eradication efforts within two years.
