Mexico launches national reforestation strategy to plant 1.5 billion trees

Mexico has launched a National Reforestation Day initiative, a strategy aimed at planting and seeding 1.5 billion trees and plants by 2030. The program involves simultaneous actions across all 32 states to protect biodiversity, water cycles, and air quality.

In Puebla, the initiative began at the Izta-Popo region, where 10,000 trees were planted across 10 hectares. Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier noted that state efforts, including the use of a Forest Police and specialized aerial support, have successfully reduced the area affected by forest fires from over 30,000 hectares in 2024 to approximately 6,000 hectares in early 2026. The state aims to plant more than 2 million trees across 2,000 hectares in the coming months.

Senator Lorenia Valles Sampedro highlighted that the national effort seeks to recover more than 32,000 hectares of territory. She emphasized the importance of continuing programs like ‘Sembrando Vida’ to combat droughts and climate change, while advocating for constitutional reforms to mandate state responsibility in environmental protection.
