Mexico launches Olinia electric vehicle project
The Mexican government is promoting Olinia, a new project aiming to manufacture up to 50,000 electric vehicles annually. The initiative focuses on local transport and goods delivery, targeting segments currently dominated by brands like Italika. The project seeks 950 million pesos in initial capitalization to establish a company for the production, distribution, and commercialization of electric units, including replacements for mototaxis and short-range cargo vehicles.
The proposed business model suggests the federal government would retain at least 33% ownership, with foreign investment capped at one-third of the capital. Beyond production funds, the call for investment seeks partners capable of developing commercial networks, financing alternatives, and after-sales services.
Separately, analysts note that Mexico's transition to electric mobility currently lacks significant public incentives. Experts suggest the market is being driven primarily by consumer demand and the influx of Chinese manufacturers looking to export surplus electric and hybrid models to international markets, including Mexico.
