Consumer protection and digital rights issues rise in Argentina and Mexico

In Argentina, the Santa Fe Provincial Consumer Defense Directorate reported 7,465 complaints between January and July 2026. Financial services led the complaints with 1,841 cases, primarily due to total failure in service provision, abusive clauses, and scams. This volume represents 76.9% of the total complaints recorded in all of 2025.

In Mexico, Deputy Francisco Sánchez Villegas of Movimiento Ciudadano has criticized the federal government and telecommunications companies, labeling the mandatory cell phone line registration as ‘digital terrorism.’ He argues that threats to suspend services to force the disclosure of personal data and CURP information constitute an attempt to control citizens and infringe on privacy.

Additionally, Mexican legislator Edna Dávalos has called upon Condusef and the CNBV to improve financial inclusion for senior citizens. She emphasized the need for accessible technology and human assistance to ensure that the digitalization of banking does not exclude older populations who may struggle with modern digital platforms.
