Mexico leads U.S. trade surplus and customs operations

Mexico has maintained its position as the leading supplier to and destination for United States merchandise trade. In July 2026, Mexico recorded a trade surplus of US$26.3 billion with the United States, driven by exports totaling US$60.5 billion, a 33.6% year-over-year increase.

Despite the USMCA undergoing annual reviews after the United States decided not to renew it in July 2026, the agreement remains in effect. However, the application of U.S. Section 232 tariffs has impacted Mexican exports in sectors including light automotive, steel, aluminum, copper, and pharmaceuticals.

In terms of operational cooperation, Mexico and the United States have surpassed 1.14 million joint customs clearance operations. This initiative, coordinated by the Tax Administration Service (SAT) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), aims to facilitate regulated trade and increase security in the logistics chain. The program has significantly reduced inspection times and transportation costs, particularly benefiting the IMMEX program and industries such as automotive, electronics, and food.
