Mexico legal experts call for extradition and rule of law reforms

Legal experts and civil society leaders in Mexico are raising concerns regarding the country's rule of law and sovereignty. Attorney Juan Manuel Delgado González, who represents high-profile cartel leaders, argues that Mexico must reform its criminal and extradition policies to protect national security. He suggests that the recent extradition of 92 individuals to the United States represents a loss of intelligence and resources that could otherwise be used to repair damage within Mexico.

Delgado proposes a new legal framework where organized crime members and political accomplices are treated as ‘intelligence and monetary assets,’ requiring them to provide information and restitution in Mexico prior to extradition. He warns that current practices allow the U.S. judicial system to leverage information at the expense of Mexican sovereignty.

In a separate discussion regarding the state of law, representatives from various democratic and legal organizations noted that while Mexico possesses many laws, enforcement remains a significant challenge. Participants highlighted the need for citizens to understand their rights to demand accountability and expressed concern over recent judicial reforms that they claim undermine the independence of the Supreme Court.
