Verónica Martínez proposes criminalizing ecocide in Mexico

Federal Deputy Verónica Martínez García has proposed an initiative to add provisions to the Federal Penal Code to criminalize ecocide. The proposal seeks to impose prison sentences ranging from 15 to 30 years, along with significant fines, for actions that cause grave, extensive, or irreversible damage to ecosystems, biodiversity, or environmental services.

The initiative emphasizes the mandatory integral reparation of environmental damage. Martínez García noted that the reform is a response to increasing environmental degradation caused by irregular industrial activities, massive deforestation, and the contamination of hydrological basins, which often escape sufficient administrative sanctions. Penalties would increase if the crimes occur in protected natural areas, biosphere reserves, or affect endangered species.
