Mexico legislator proposes road synchronization to reduce congestion

Federal Deputy Xitlalic Ceja García has introduced an initiative to reform the General Law of Mobility and Road Safety in Mexico. The proposal aims to incorporate road synchronization schemes to reduce travel times and mitigate the economic, environmental, and public health impacts caused by traffic congestion.

According to the initiative, Mexico loses more than 56.8 billion pesos annually in productivity due to road saturation. Data from the 2025 TomTom index indicates that the country has a congestion level of 37 percent, the highest in North America. The legislator noted that the vehicle fleet has grown from approximately 5.7 million units in 1980 to over 61.2 million registered vehicles, according to INEGI.

The proposal seeks to establish synchronization as a planning principle and tool to coordinate movement and control infrastructure at intersections. This is intended to create safer, more orderly travel and reduce the risk of accidents without compromising pedestrian accessibility or the established hierarchy of mobility.
