Mexico leverages World Cup to spotlight missing persons crisis

The Fundación para la Justicia and Mexico’s State of the Rule of Law have launched the digital campaign #UnEstadioDeDesaparecidxs #LaCopaSinEllxs, using the global attention on the 2026 FIFA World Cup to highlight the plight of more than 130,000 people who have disappeared in Mexico. The campaign urges families, the public and international bodies to pressure authorities for greater forensic capacity, financial resources and cooperation, and it coincides with a protest by the Madres Buscadoras at Estadio Azteca.

The UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances has referred Mexico’s situation to the UN General Assembly, calling for international assistance rather than sanctions. Mexican officials, including Interior Minister Rosa Icela Rodríguez, have faced criticism for an aggressive response to the committee’s findings. Demonstrations supporting the cause have also appeared in Laredo, Texas, extending the advocacy across the border. Organisers seek to turn the World Cup’s worldwide spotlight into a megaphone for families demanding justice and identification of the missing.
