Latin American protests erupt over education budgets and historical commemorations

Multiple regions in Latin America are experiencing significant social unrest and labor actions. In Mexico City, the Comité 68 Pro Libertades Democráticas has organized a large-scale march for October 2 to commemorate the 58th anniversary of the 1968 student movement. The march is scheduled to begin at 16:00 hours at the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco, proceeding through Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas and Avenida 5 de Mayo before concluding at the Zócalo. President Claudia Sheinbaum has defended the current state of democracy, asserting that there is no state-led repression or restriction on freedom of expression in the country.

In Chile, massive protests have erupted in Santiago and other cities, including Valparaíso and Concepción, led by the Confederación de Estudiantes de Chile (Confech). Demonstrators are protesting proposed 2027 education budget cuts by the government of President José Antonio Kast. Reports indicate that Chilean police (Carabineros) used water cannons and tear gas to disperse crowds, leading to clashes and several arrests.

Additionally, labor disputes are affecting the education sector in other nations. In Costa Rica, teachers at the Colegio Ingeniero Alejandro Quesada Ramírez have initiated a strike due to unpaid salary components dating back to February. In Peru, the Sutep union has announced a national strike for October 29 to demand increased investment in education infrastructure and resources.
