Mexico marks Independence Day with historic ceremonies and chiles en nogada

Mexico is preparing for its annual patriotic celebrations on September 15 and 16. Streets will be adorned with the tricolor flag, public buildings illuminated, and families gathering to enjoy traditional dishes such as pozole and the seasonal specialty chiles en nogada.

The two dates have distinct historical meanings. September 15 marks the start of the Mexican War of Independence when the conspirators—including Miguel Hidalgo, Ignacio Allende, Juan Aldama and Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez—were discovered and Hidalgo issued the famous Grito de Dolores in Dolores, Guanajuato. September 16 is the official national holiday commemorating the beginning of the armed struggle for independence.

During the holiday season, numerous restaurants in Mexico City and Puebla feature chiles en nogada, a dish symbolizing the national colors. Establishments such as Clavería, El Cardenal, and Azul offer variations of the dish, often highlighting local ingredients and elaborate presentations.
