Mexico mining sector sees limited new projects amid regulatory shifts
The Mexican mining sector is experiencing a period of conservative investment and regulatory navigation. According to the Mexican Mining Chamber (Camimex), only two new mining projects were authorized in 2025. While existing operations have seen progress in maintaining necessary authorizations, the physical production volume index grew by only 0.2% compared to 2024, suggesting that production value increases were driven by price factors rather than expanded activity.
Camimex President Pedro Rivero González noted that the sector faces challenges in developing new projects, with mining employment dropping 4% to 400,057 jobs due to the exhaustion of mature mines and a lack of new projects. Currently, Mexico has 588 mining projects, including 233 exploration and 193 production sites.
In a specific development within this landscape, Mercado Minerals Ltd., through its subsidiary Concordia Silver, has secured a formal community access agreement with the community of Campanillas in Sinaloa. This agreement clears a significant social and regulatory hurdle, allowing the company to move forward with drilling permit applications for the Zamora project, which shows documented potential for high-grade silver and gold.
