Mexico misses global competitiveness targets for 2025 and 2026

Mexico has fallen short of the competitiveness targets set by the Ministry of Economy for 2025 and 2026, according to the World Competitiveness Index (WCI) produced by the Switzerland-based IMD Institute for Management Development.

In 2025, Mexico improved its ranking from 56th to 55th place, achieving a score of 48.84 against a government target of 50.1. However, by 2026, the country's score dropped to 42.85, falling below the 50.4 target and resulting in a decline in ranking from 55th to 62nd place.

The federal government noted that while Mexico maintains strengths in trade integration, export capacity, and attractiveness for supply chain relocation, significant limitations remain regarding productivity and economic growth. To address these issues, the Ministry of Economy developed the 2025 Inhibitors Report to identify priority areas such as mitigating commercial uncertainty, improving the business environment, and reducing competitiveness gaps between different states.
