Mexico suspends mobile lines ending in 2 due to registration failure

Mexico's Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT) has begun a gradual suspension of mobile phone lines ending in the digit 2 that failed to link their service with a user's official identity. The deadline for this block was September 15, and service disruptions are expected to occur over a 72-hour period starting September 16.

To prevent suspension, users must associate their prepaid lines with a valid CURP and an official identification document. This mandatory registration process is part of a staggered national schedule intended to reduce anonymity and combat crimes such as fraud, extortion, and kidnapping. The CRT estimates that approximately 25 million lines could eventually be decommissioned if they remain unregistered.

Suspended lines are not permanently lost. Users can reactivate their service immediately by completing the registration through their provider's digital platform or at a physical service center. Even with a suspended line, users can still access emergency services (911), receive seismic alerts, and navigate provider websites without consuming data. The next phase of the registration schedule is set for lines ending in 3 on September 30.
