Mexico mobile registration reaches 91 million lines

Mexico's mandatory mobile phone registration process has reached over 91.8 million linked lines, representing 76.5% of the total target population according to the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT). The registration initiative aims to eliminate anonymity to combat crimes such as fraud and extortion.

The CRT is implementing a staggered deactivation schedule based on the final digit of phone numbers. For numbers ending in 3, the regulator reported that 87.3% of the expected segment has completed registration, resulting in the reactivation of over 1.2 million previously suspended lines. The next deadline is set for October 15 for numbers ending in 4.

While the government continues the rollout, some citizens have expressed skepticism on social media regarding data privacy and the security of their personal information following previous government database breaches. The CRT also expects to purge approximately 25 million lines deemed to be in disuse, including unactivated chips and promotional numbers.
