Mexico Mothers Protest Missing Persons Crisis During World Cup 2026 Opening

On the day of the 2026 FIFA World Cup inauguration in Mexico City, groups of mothers of missing persons gathered outside the Estadio Ciudad de México. They carried signs such as “¿La pelota vuelve a casa y nuestros desaparecidos cuándo?” and shouted the slogan “México campeón en desaparición” to draw international attention to the more than 133,000 people reported missing in Mexico.

The protest escalated when police attempted to contain the demonstrators, leading to arrests, scuffles and the throwing of stones and metal barriers. Protesters, including Yoltzi Martínez who has searched for her sister for 16 years, criticised the government’s spending on stadium preparations while families remain without answers. The demonstrators also remembered the 43 students from the 2014 Ayotzinapa case, linking the current crisis to past forced‑disappearance incidents.

Authorities responded with a heavy security presence, sparking further tension as some participants tried to push forward toward the stadium. The event highlighted the clash between the celebration of a major sporting event and ongoing human‑rights concerns in Mexico.
