Mexico motorcycle usage surges amid rising road fatalities

Mexico is experiencing a significant surge in motorcycle usage and a corresponding rise in road accidents. According to INEGI data, the motorcycle vehicle fleet in the country grew by 345 percent in 2024. This boom is attributed to post-pandemic economic shifts, rising fuel costs, and increased accessibility through easy financing plans.

In Torreón, motorcycle users accounted for 18 of the 35 road fatalities recorded so far in 2026. Local authorities have intensified the ‘Conduce Seguro’ program to curb risks such as speeding, lack of protective gear, and driving under the influence, particularly among young riders aged 18 to 24.

In the Veracruz-Boca del Río area, emergency services report a rise in fatal accidents. A primary risk factor identified by the Mexican Red Cross is the use of mobile phones while riding. This is especially prevalent among food delivery workers who use smartphone mounts for navigation, often operating under informal employment schemes without adequate insurance.
