U.S. and Mexico conduct major drug interdiction operations
U.S. and Mexican authorities have conducted several major drug interdiction operations. In the eastern Pacific, U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) intercepted and sank a vessel believed to be a floating refueling station for the Ecuadorian criminal group Los Choneros. The crew was evacuated and is being handed over to Ecuadorian authorities. This marks the seventh such vessel sunk by U.S. forces in the region since late August.
In Mexico, the Navy (Semar) reported a significant increase in maritime drug seizures, with approximately 37.8 tons of cocaine intercepted between January and September 2026, a 47.2% increase over the total for 2025. Additionally, at Mexico City International Airport (AICM), authorities seized over one ton of coffee contaminated with cocaine base during an international transit inspection.
In the United States, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized approximately 276 kilograms of methamphetamine hidden inside bags of charcoal at the Mariposa port of entry in Nogales, Arizona.
