Mexico ranks fourth globally in tourism GDP and leisure spending

Mexico has secured the fourth global position in two key economic indicators released by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) for 2025. The country ranks fourth worldwide in both the direct contribution of travel and tourism to GDP, totaling $149.4 billion, and in spending on leisure and pleasure travel, reaching $237.9 billion. In both categories, Mexico trails only the United States, China, and Germany.

According to WTTC President and CEO Gloria Guevara, Mexico’s tourism sector showed significant dynamism, with international visitor spending growing by 3.5% in 2025, contrasting with declines in the United States and Canada. The state of Quintana Roo remains a primary driver of this success, particularly through destinations like Cancún and the Riviera Maya.

In addition to these economic rankings, Mexican business leaders and government officials are working to address sector challenges. CONCANACO SERVYTUR México met with Supreme Court Minister Lenia Batres to discuss economic justice and concerns regarding insecurity, extortion, and overregulation. Meanwhile, efforts to strengthen national tourism connectivity include initiatives involving the Tren Maya, the Islas Marías, and the state-operated Mexicana de Aviación.
