Mexico news consumption shifts to social media and video

According to the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026, social media and video platforms have overtaken traditional television as the primary news sources for Mexicans. In a significant shift, 66% of people in Mexico use social media to consume news weekly, while television usage for information purposes has dropped to 34%, nearly half of the levels recorded in 2017.

Key platforms used for news consumption in Mexico include Facebook (57%), WhatsApp (35%), YouTube (34%), and TikTok (27%). While social media popularity has surged, the report notes that traditional media outlets remain the preferred option for users seeking to verify information.

Globally, this trend is mirrored, with social media and video platforms becoming the most used news sources at 54%, surpassing news websites and apps at 51%.
