Mexico opens new consulate in Chongqing, China

Mexico has inaugurated its first new consular representation in China in 20 years, establishing a consulate in the city of Chongqing. The opening follows a formal agreement reached between both nations in July 2023.

Inaugurated by Foreign Secretary Roberto Velasco, the consulate is intended to serve the southwestern region of China, a major industrial and technological hub with a population exceeding 32 million. The mission will focus on providing consular services to Mexican citizens, promoting Mexican interests, and strengthening bilateral ties with regional actors.

The inauguration ceremony was held in a hybrid format involving the Mexican Embassy in Beijing and local authorities in Chongqing. Mexican Ambassador to China, Jesús Seade, noted that the consulate will serve as a center for closer communication to foster friendship between the two nations.
