Mexico's Education Ministry Cancels Militarized Schools After Dafne Zapata Murder
The Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) issued a directive (UR‑100/OCSEP/0181/2026, 29 July) ordering the cancellation of all "militarizada", "militar" or "castrense" school programs for the 2026‑2027 cycle. The order follows the femicide of 13‑year‑old Dafne Zapata Quintos at the Doenitz Military Academy in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas, a case that has linked at least three suspects to the crime.
SEP secretary Mario Delgado Carrillo said military‑oriented education is incompatible with the national education system. State education authorities, including the Secretaría de Educación de Tamaulipas, will review every institution using militarized terminology, suspend those lacking the required permits, and guarantee students receive their documentation. Private schools in Tamaulipas such as Colegio Calmécac (Reynosa) and Colegio Niños Héroes (Altamira) have already removed militarized terms from their names to comply.
While most states are preparing to enforce the directive, the governments of Zacatecas and Aguascalientes publicly rejected the closure decision, asserting their schools meet legal requirements. The Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (Sedena) reiterated that the use of military uniforms, insignia or ranks in any school is prohibited and illegal under the Federal Penal Code, noting it no longer supervises these institutions since a 2008 decree.
Nationally, the SEP catalog lists 31 schools that identify as militarized—23 publicly funded and 8 privately run—prompting a broader debate about the role of discipline‑based education in Mexico.
