Mexico pledges ongoing humanitarian aid to Cuba, says President Sheinbaum

On 10 June 2024, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum told a press conference in Mexico City that Mexico will continue providing humanitarian assistance to Cuba. She said the island nation is facing a difficult situation and needs international solidarity, especially as the United States tightens sanctions that have been in place for more than six decades.

Sheinbaum affirmed, “We will keep sending all kinds of assistance for the Cuban people,” and emphasized Mexico’s long‑standing cooperation with Cuba. She also criticised the United States for using drug‑trafficking concerns to intervene in other countries’ affairs and referenced her earlier support for the right of nations to self‑determination. The president questioned the relevance of recent US criminal charges against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro, asking, “What is the point of accusing someone for an event that happened 30 years ago?”
