Mexico political figures address campaigning and legislative vacancies

Political figures in Mexico are addressing internal party activities and potential legislative disruptions ahead of the 2027 elections. Francisco Vázquez Rodríguez, coordinator for Morena in the State of Mexico Congress, denied that recent territorial activities involving the distribution of food baskets in the Valley of Mexico constitute premature campaigning. While defending these actions as part of the party’s permanent organizational work, he noted that the party will review the conduct of certain legislators and may issue warnings or sanctions if internal rules were violated.

Separately, Federal Deputy Carlos Canturosas Villarreal warned of a potential legislative exodus. He reported that more than 50 federal and local legislators have reportedly requested leaves of absence to pursue elective offices in 2027. Canturosas Villarreal cautioned that a mass departure could result in a significant number of alternates taking office, which might hinder legislative productivity, affect the quality of laws, and jeopardize the quorum necessary for constitutional reforms.
