Mexico political reform and migrant reintegration challenges

Alejandro Robles Gómez, the Secretary of Migrants in the Exterior for the Morena party, has expressed support for a proposal by President Claudia Sheinbaum that would prohibit individuals with dual nationality from seeking the Presidency of the Republic or governorships. Robles Gómez stated that those aiming to lead the country must demonstrate “absolute loyalty toward Mexico” to protect national sovereignty and independence.

Separately, discussions regarding the challenges of migrant reintegration in Mexico highlight the vulnerabilities of returning populations. Data from UNAM indicates significant health and social risks for returning migrants, particularly elderly individuals. A study shows that nearly 44% of returning elderly migrants suffer from at least two diseases, and many face isolation and a lack of medical protection after losing employment and insurance. In Puebla, more than 16,000 migrants returned between January 2025 and August 2026, often facing difficult socio-economic conditions upon reentry.
