Mexico political tensions rise over opposition status and dual nationality proposal

Political discourse in Mexico is currently centered on the status of the opposition and new legislative proposals regarding citizenship. Critics argue that the ruling Morena party maintains a narrative that the political opposition is divided or non-existent, despite opposition parties securing 46% of the national vote in the 2024 elections.

Additionally, President Claudia Sheinbaum has proposed an initiative requiring individuals with dual or multiple nationality to renounce them if they seek high-level offices, such as the Presidency, governorships, or the Head of Government of Mexico City. This proposal affects an estimated 21 million Mexicans who hold multiple nationalities, often acquired by birth. Critics suggest the move stigmatizes plurinationality and uses the defense of sovereignty as a tool for political exclusion.
