Mexico politicians linked to fuel smuggler Sergio Carmona Angulo

Investigations by United States intelligence agencies suggest links between businessman Sergio Carmona Angulo, known as the ‘Rey del Huachicol’, and several politicians from the Morena party in Mexico. Documents recovered from three mobile phones seized after Carmona’s assassination in November 2021 reportedly detail communications and meetings involving political figures.

In the state of Nayarit, investigations allegedly document at least four meetings between Carmona’s associates and members of the electoral team for Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero during his 2021 gubernatorial campaign. Authorities are examining whether proceeds from illegal fuel smuggling and tax evasion were used to finance these political activities.

Leaked chat logs have also surfaced involving Morena Senator José Ramón Gómez Leal. According to Miguel Meza, founder of the Narcopolíticos platform, the messages indicate a long-standing relationship between the senator and Carmona. The conversations, dating back to 2021, mention meetings in Monterrey, Reynosa, and Culiacán, and involve other figures such as Lacho García, a former subsecretary of Health.
