Mexico poverty data shows Coahuila declines while Guerrero remains high
Recent data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reveals divergent poverty trends across Mexican states for 2024.
Coahuila has seen a significant decline in multidimensional poverty, which fell to 12.4% in 2024. This represents a reduction of nearly half from the 27.1% recorded in 2016, affecting approximately 421,800 people. Extreme poverty in the state also dropped to 0.8%. Coahuila currently ranks as the fourth state with the lowest proportion of multidimensional poverty in the country.
In contrast, Guerrero remains among the states with the highest poverty rates. In 2024, Guerrero reported that 58.1% of its population faced multidimensional poverty and 21.3% lived in extreme poverty, making it the second highest in the nation after Chiapas.
Nationally, Mexico's multidimensional poverty rate stood at 29.6% in 2024. Between 2016 and 2024, the total number of people in multidimensional poverty decreased from 52.2 million to 38.5 million, while extreme poverty fell from 8.7 million to 7 million people.
