Claudia Sheinbaum Calls for Social Media, AI Regulation and Rejects Trump's Cartel Claims

Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced plans to open a national debate on regulating minors’ access to social media and the use of artificial intelligence. She warned that excessive screen time can lead to addiction and cited existing restrictions on mobile phone use in schools, as well as legislation in other countries. Referring to a recent law in San Luis Potosí that criminalises the misuse of AI with penalties of two to five years, she said the discussion should also cover AI’s role in schools and electoral campaigns.

Sheinbaum also responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks at the G7 summit that Mexican cartels “run” the country. She characterised Trump’s statements as uninformed, urging Mexicans not to “engage” with every comment. She highlighted recent security gains, noting a 46 % drop in intentional homicides and a 70 % reduction in fentanyl shipments into the United States, and praised security officials such as Omar García Harfuch. She reiterated that “the Mexican state still exists” and defended national sovereignty against external criticism.
