Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum faced CNTE teachers protest in Zacatecas

President Claudia Sheinbaum returned to Río Grande, Zacatecas, to hand out Women’s Welfare pension cards when dozens of teachers from the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE) staged a peaceful protest outside the venue. The teachers shouted slogans such as “¡Fuera, fuera!” and demanded the repeal of the ISSSTE pension law and a change to the teacher‑evaluation system.

Sheinbaum responded that any modifications to teacher evaluation will be decided through a nation‑wide school‑by‑school consultation, rejecting “back‑room negotiations” with union leaders. She highlighted the government’s achievements, noting a 10 % annual salary increase for teachers, the basification of more than one million educators under the previous administration, and the ongoing basification of 200 000 teachers under her term. She reiterated that all teachers have access to the Fondo de Pensiones para el Bienestar.

The protest underscored lingering discontent among a segment of the teaching workforce despite the administration’s broader reforms.
