Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum Unveils Social and Economic Development Plans

On May 31, President Claudia Sheinbaum presented a government report highlighting record foreign direct investment of $23.6 billion, unemployment at 2.5 percent, falling inflation, a stable peso and growing tourism. She noted a 154 percent rise in the minimum wage since 2018, welfare programmes now covering 42.8 million people, pensions for 14.1 million seniors and additional support for 3 million older women. Infrastructure achievements include the construction of 29 new hospitals, 300 000 extra school spaces, new rail lines, energy projects and the strengthening of Pemex and the CFE. Homicides fell 49 percent and high‑impact crimes dropped 20 percent.

Sheinbaum announced further initiatives: a partnership with the Mexican Football Federation and Liga MX to expand youth development through more than 28 000 schools and 68 000 children; the reversal of the 2013 education reform and the launch of the “Nueva Escuela Mexicana,” securing permanent jobs for over 1.2 million teachers with salary raises and pension fund improvements. The ISSSTE will invest in hospitals and clinics, and 49 000 loans were issued by Fovissste. Over 9.5 billion pesos are earmarked for the public pension system and a new public insurer to cut costs. Infrastructure spending will increase in the second half of the year via public works and public‑private partnerships for roads, energy, hospitals and railways, all remaining state‑owned. She also called for legal review of alleged election irregularities in Coahuila and warned against right‑wing interference from Mexico and the United States.
