Mexico President discusses jet fuel subsidies amid Tulum flight cancellations

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo stated that subsidizing jet fuel is a “more complex” task than subsidizing gasoline or diesel. She attributed the recent decline in flights to the Tulum International Airport to rising global jet fuel costs, a trend she noted is affecting international aviation due to conflicts in the Middle East.

Regarding the specific situation in Tulum, Sheinbaum noted that three airlines have canceled or suspended operations at the terminal. Aeroméxico temporarily suspended its flights to the destination on September 30, while Volaris announced it will cease operations at the airport starting January 7, 2027.

The President emphasized that the government maintains constant communication with Aeroméxico, Volaris, and Viva Aerobús. She also indicated that representatives from state-owned companies managed by the Secretariat of National Defense will provide further details regarding the specific circumstances in Tulum during an upcoming briefing this Thursday.
