Mexico President Sheinbaum alleges electoral contract monopolies since 1999
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has alleged the existence of monopolies regarding the procurement of electoral materials dating back to 1999. She stated that certain companies have acted as intermediaries without employing workers to secure contracts for the National Electoral Institute (INE) and state electoral bodies.
Sheinbaum noted that these irregularities predate the current administration of Guadalupe Taddei, citing controversial periods in 1999 and 2005. She specifically mentioned that despite previous scandals, these providers were recognized as contractors in 2014 during the tenure of former INE councilor Lorenzo Córdova.
To address these issues, the federal government proposes that Talleres Gráficos de México (TGM), an agency under the Ministry of the Interior, assume full responsibility for producing electoral stationery. The plan includes strengthening TGM’s capacity and opening its Board of Directors to universities to ensure transparency.
An audit will cover contracts made since 1999. Sheinbaum indicated that if sufficient evidence is found, criminal complaints will be filed with the Attorney General's Office (FGR).
