Alonso Ancira fails to complete $216 million Pemex reparations, says President Sheinbaum

President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that former Altos Hornos de México owner Alonso Ancira has not finished paying the $216.66 million reparations ordered for the Agronitrogenados case. Under the 2019 settlement, Ancira paid $50 million in November 2021 and $54 million in November 2022, but the third instalment of about $112 million, originally due in November 2023, was postponed for a year and remains unpaid as of early July 2026.

Because of the missed payment, the criminal process against Ancira was re‑activated. The Fiscalía General de la República will provide further details. Ancira, who was detained in 2019 and extradited from Spain in 2021, faces the possibility of re‑arrest if he does not complete the agreement. The case is linked to the detention of Gilda Lozoya, sister of former Pemex director Emilio Lozoya, who is alleged to have benefited from the over‑priced purchase of the Agronitrogenados fertilizer plant.

The affair represents one of the most emblematic corruption scandals involving Pemex and the former steel‑maker AHMSA, highlighting ongoing legal and political scrutiny of the deal that cost the state an estimated $275 million for a plant deemed obsolete.
