Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal Denies NYT Allegations of Corruption
The government of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas issued an official statement rejecting the allegations published by The New York Times on June 27 that linked Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya to narcotics‑related wrongdoing. The administration asserted that no investigation, accusation, or formal notification exists in either Mexico or the United States to substantiate the report’s claims.
The statement emphasized that the NYT article relied on five anonymous sources who were not authorized to speak publicly, and that the newspaper never identified the governor as an informant or accused him of criminal conduct. The government also criticized media outlets that, in its view, added unverified interpretations to the original story, describing the situation as a “double falsehood.”
Governor Villarreal denied the accusations “categorically, absolutely and emphatically,” and pledged to defend his name and that of his administration through legal channels. The office reiterated respect for press freedom while urging that “the truth is established with facts, not headlines.”
