Mexico President Sheinbaum launches teacher consultation as government reaches Ayotzinapa normalistas deal

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a nationwide consultation with more than one million teachers to design a new system to replace the USICAMM. She said the government will keep dialogue open with the CNTE, stressing that “México es un país de libertades, es un país democrático, no reprimimos”. The consultation will begin in August and will be conducted school‑by‑school, covering entry, promotion and career‑advancement issues for educators.

Arturo Medina, the undersecretary for Human Rights, Population and Migration, reported that after four days of talks with the Ayotzinapa normalistas on the Mexico‑Cuernavaca highway, an agreement was reached to end the blockade and reopen the road. The deal includes a private meeting before the students return to Guerrero and addresses concerns raised by families of the 43 missing students. Medina noted that the presence of parents altered some terms and that investigations into homemade explosives on the buses continue.
