Mexico President Sheinbaum pushes public insurer to overhaul teachers' pensions

President Claudia Sheinbaum, speaking at a press conference with Education Secretary Mario Delgado and ISSSTE head Martí Batres, said the government will strengthen Pensionissste and create a public insurer as a viable option to meet teachers’ demands. Batres warned that the 2007 ISSSTE law cannot be repealed overnight because doing so would require about 7 trillion pesos, a sum the state does not possess. Delgado noted that since the start of the current six‑year term, 23,675.9 billion pesos have been allocated to education in Oaxaca for teacher support, infrastructure and student scholarships. He described Pensionissste as a potential coordinating axis that could be progressively integrated, rather than a sudden overhaul. The announcement follows previous actions such as the repeal of the 2014 education reform, the restoration of teachers’ professional status and the end of long‑standing persecution of educators.
