Mexico's President Sheinbaum rejects inheritance tax proposal

President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico will not pursue a tax on inheritances or on the retirement‑account (Afore) funds of deceased workers, stating “No es un planteamiento que nosotros apoyaríamos”. The comment came after Supreme Court minister Lenia Batres suggested reviewing the fiscal treatment of inheritances and Afore withdrawals, calling the current exemption “unfair”. Morena deputies Ricardo Monreal and Jericó Abramo Masso also opposed the idea; Monreal affirmed “no habrá ningún impuesto a las herencias” and Abramo called the proposal “una desesperación fiscal”. Monreal added that while the party will block any such initiative, a broader fiscal reform may be needed. The Party of Labor’s Reginaldo Sandoval urged a national debate limited to large estates, saying “el tema de gravar las herencias… es una discusión mundial”. No legislation has been introduced, and the government will not open a congressional debate on the matter.
