Mexico President Sheinbaum Rejects NYT Report on Governors' Alleged US Links
President Claudia Sheinbaum denounced a New York Times article that alleged United States investigations into two Morena governors, Alfonso Durazo of Sonora and Américo Villarreal of Tamaulipas, for possible connections with organized crime. Sheinbaum said her administration has no information confirming the claims and criticized the report’s reliance on unnamed sources, calling it “unacceptable for a newspaper that claims to be one of the world’s best.”
Durazo has publicly denied the allegations, defending Mexican sovereignty against what he described as potential foreign interference. The controversy arises amid broader U.S. probes of Mexican officials linked to criminal networks, heightening political and diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
