Mexico demands accountability from US ICE after migrant deaths
President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the recent deaths of Mexican migrants during ICE operations, calling for an end to the criminalisation of migration and urging the United States to respect human‑rights standards. She said Mexico will incorporate the latest fatality – a Mexican man run over in Florida – into its diplomatic and legal actions, and noted that a total of 17 Mexican nationals have died in ICE custody this year.
The United States returned letters from Mexico that raised concerns over ICE raids, with State Department officials stating the correspondence attempted to influence U.S. operational decisions. The Mexican embassy reiterated its demand that private detention facilities, such as the Adelanto centre, adhere to protocol and respect detainees’ rights.
The controversy also extends to the shooting death of Colombian migrant Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Maine, prompting scrutiny of the ICE agent involved and sparking protests in the United States and abroad. Organizations and families have called for transparent investigations and reforms of ICE practices.
