Claudia Sheinbaum addresses US criticism, consular policy and viral duck amid World Cup celebrations

President Claudia Sheinbaum said welfare delegate Manuela Obrador will receive a formal reprimand for calling U.S. President Donald Trump a “tirano misógino y tipo asqueroso” during a party rally, stressing the need for respect toward the American leader and noting a possible administrative breach for holding a dual party and government role.

Sheinbaum also declared that Mexican consulates are not venues for personal or partisan promotion. In the same morning press briefing she highlighted the viral “Pato Merlín” – a duck that became an internet meme after Mexico’s World Cup 2026 celebrations – calling it a small symbol of Mexican culture and inviting the bird to visit Palacio Nacional. She congratulated the national football team on topping Group A after a 1‑0 win over South Korea, referenced discussions with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, urged the United States to deploy troops to curb arms trafficking, and announced a 24‑hour digital chat service for public procedures.
