Mexico President Sheinbaum's Pension Reform Triggers Retiree Protests

Around 100‑300 retired workers from former state enterprises—including Luz y Fuerza del Centro, Pemex, the Federal Electricity Commission, Banobras and Cenace—gathered in Mexico City on August 5 outside the Instituto para Devolver al Pueblo lo Robado (INDEP). They demanded the return of pension amounts deducted since April after the government introduced a reform that caps "golden pensions" at half the president’s salary, roughly 67,000 pesos a month (later raised to about 134,000 pesos).

The reform, announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum, seeks to limit pension benefits for former public‑sector employees to the equivalent of the president’s salary. Retirees say the cuts were applied without compensation and blame the Treasury’s lack of resources for the delay. Protesters shouted slogans such as “No robé, no mentí, no traicioné – Justice!” and called for full respect of their acquired rights.
