Mexico electoral preparations intensify ahead of 2027 elections

Preparations for Mexico’s 2027 elections are underway, marked by shifting voter demographics and evolving political landscapes. In the State of Mexico, the electoral roll has surpassed 13 million registrations, with the nominal list reaching approximately 13.1 million citizens. Officials anticipate the roll could exceed 13.5 million by 2027.

In Mexico City, the Electoral Institute (IECM) has formalized the roadmap for the June 2027 local elections, which will renew all 16 mayoralties and the city's Congress. The process emphasizes inclusion through affirmative actions for youth, seniors, and indigenous communities, while also integrating new political forces, Somos México and Paz.

Public perception regarding the political landscape shows significant trends. A Mitofsky survey indicates that 74.7% of Mexicans believe the current number of national political parties is excessive, with most preferring a system of two to four parties. Ideologically, Morena is largely associated with the left, while the PAN and PRI are positioned on the right. New parties continue to face challenges with voter recognition.
