Mexico promotes legal certainty through testamentary programs

Various initiatives in Mexico are promoting the creation of wills to ensure legal certainty regarding personal assets and prevent family disputes. During September, the “Mes del Testamento” program is being implemented nationwide, offering reduced costs for the procedure. In some notary offices, the cost is approximately 2,000 pesos, representing a 50 percent discount from standard rates.

In Progreso, Yucatán, a specialized session for holographic wills (handwritten documents) will be held at Parque Independencia. Legal experts from the State Government's Legal Counsel, the Notarial Archive of Yucatán, and practicing notaries will provide free advisory services. To participate, individuals must be adults who can read and write, and they should bring official identification, a birth certificate, and their CURP.

Legal experts note that a will is a voluntary act that only takes effect upon the death of the testator. It can be revoked or modified if the owner's intentions change over time. The process no longer requires the three witnesses that were previously mandatory.
