Mexico proposes constitutional recognition for citizens living abroad

Deputy Karina Alejandra del Río Zenteno has proposed a constitutional reform to formally recognize the Mexican migrant community living abroad. The initiative seeks to amend Article 2 of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States to explicitly include Mexicans residing outside national territory as part of the Mexican community.

The proposal aims to guarantee the rights of migrants and strengthen their legal recognition, acknowledging their economic, social, and cultural contributions to the country, such as remittances and cultural exchange. Additionally, the reform intends to establish mechanisms for the diaspora to participate in public affairs and decisions affecting their rights and interests, ensuring that national belonging is not limited by place of residence.
