Mexico legislators propose new social and labor protections
Various legislative initiatives have been introduced in Mexico to address social protection and labor rights.
Deputy Vanessa López Carrillo (PT) has proposed reforms to the Federal Penal Code to classify the unauthorized use of pension cards and social support resources as breach of trust. The proposal seeks to increase penalties by up to one-third when the victim is a senior citizen or person with a disability. It also calls for the Banco del Bienestar to implement accessible protocols for reporting the illicit retention of these funds.
In Puebla, Deputy Julio Huerta Gómez (Morena) proposed an initiative to amend the state constitution, requiring candidates for governor to renounce any dual nationality and demonstrate five years of effective residency in the state to ensure institutional loyalty.
Regarding labor rights, Deputy Paulo Gonzalo Martínez López (PAN) is pushing for reforms to the Federal Labor Law to mandate that digital platform companies provide accident insurance for motorcycle delivery workers. This coverage would include protection against accidents, injuries, and third-party damages.
Additionally, in Morelos, Deputy Jazmín Solano López presented eight initiatives to protect vulnerable groups, including updates to the Penal Code to address digital security, animal cruelty, and the rights of children and the elderly.
