Mexico proposes public insurer to meet teachers' pension demands

Education Secretary Mario Delgado and ISSSTE head Martí Batres said the government plans to strengthen Pensionissste and create a public insurer as a viable way to address the demands of the teachers' union CNTE. Batres warned that the 2007 ISSSTE law cannot be repealed "de un día a otro" because doing so would require about 7 trillion pesos. Delgado noted that 23.675 trillion pesos have been allocated for education projects in Oaxaca since the start of the current term. The officials highlighted pension reforms that aim to bring retirees' benefits closer to their last salaries, citing the Pensionissste fund and the new welfare pension supplement.

Both leaders emphasized the need for transparency and the protection of workers' rights in the proposed public insurer, positioning it as a progressive step for Mexico’s public sector and its educators.
